CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO DO

BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR YOUR TOUR

Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into any country. Also, check that your passport has extra empty pages because a visa may take up an entire empty page. Renew your passport or add additional pages as soon as possible, if it is necessary to do so.
Don’t advertise the fact that you will be away from home for an extended period of time. Make arrangements for newspapers, magazines, mail, etc. to suspend services.
Securely lock all windows and doors. Leave window shades in a position that would be normal if you were at home.
Arr
ange for a house-sitter if you require one.
Ensure that insurance policies, taxes, and any other bills are paid up or the company is notified of the delay.
Arrange for your mail to be picked up or held at your branch post office until you return.
Arrange for care of your lawn, garden, and house plants.
Arrange for care of your pets.
Check major service installations such as refrigerator, furnace and water heater to make certain they are in good working order.
Disconnect major electrical appliances, such as computers, microwave, etc., that will not be used while you are away.
Set thermostat at an energy-conserving temperature.
Notify a trusted neighbor, family member or friend that you intend to be away and give them the approximate date of your return. Let them know who has the key to your home.
Notify the local Fire and/or Police department that you intend to be away and give them the approximate date of your return. Let them know who has the key to your home.
Leave a key to your home, your itinerary, and emergency contact information with a neighbor, family member or friend.
Notify your bank and other financial institutions that issued the credit/debit/ATM cards you will be using about the country or countries you will be touring, and when. Make sure you have a list of important phone numbers to contact should your cards be stolen or lost.
Go to the bank or an ATM to get some cash.
A few days before your departure, read the list of things to bring, and go shopping for what you need.
Talk to your travel doctor and get whatever vaccinations, immunizations or medications you may need. Please note that some vaccinations may require follow-up booster shots, and therefore you must allow more time for those vaccinations.
Talk to your doctor about any prescriptions you may require for the time you will be away. Go to the pharmacy if necessary. Keep your medications in their original containers and ensure that they are clearly labeled. It is also a good idea to bring along written prescriptions of important medications.
Make photocopies of your passport and other important documents. Keep these extra copies in a different place from where the originals are kept.
