By Chee Choy, founder of Jalan Jalan Asia
When I was a young child, back when life moved at a more leisurely pace, after my sister and I had eaten our dinner my mother would say “Let’s go jalan jalan.” There was no destination to jalan jalan: we were simply going for a stroll in the neighborhood.
Along the way, we would sometimes stop and talk to the neighbors, each sharing stories about their day or lives. Sometimes they shared recipes. My mother would point out flowers that had just bloomed, or the many mangoes ripening in Mrs. Lee’s garden. Sometimes my mother used the occasion to teach us kids important lessons. “Don’t get the sap of this plant in your eyes,” or, for the umpteenth time, she cautioned us, “Be careful whenever you cross this foot bridge over the longkang (a drainage canal).”
If we were lucky, we would stop at the small grocery store where she would buy just one yummy treat for each of us, which we had to save for the following day.
And when the evening became night, as we returned home, we would play a game, trying to see how many faces or shapes of things we could spot on the face of the moon.
It was about being grateful for the day that was coming to a close and being excited about the new day that was about to unfold. It was time shared. It was just jalan jalan.
Jalan jalan is about taking time to have fun and to enjoy life. Let’s go jalan jalan!
